I would be interested in the serial number of your gearbox if it has the roll pins. The number is on the passenger's side of the gearbox case, as shown in the attachment. BMIHT says your original gearbox serial number is 12706. Unless your gearbox is not original, it should take the threaded pins. If your gearbox is the original and still has the roll pins, then that is another example of the official BMC parts manual being wrong.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS";color:#002060'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS";color:#002060'>The gearshift lever ball has to be free to rotate right and left to select the gears. A pin all the way through the ball would prevent that. Although the ball is drilled all the way through, there is a vertical groove on each side of the ball that accommodates the pins to prevent the gear lever from moving upward and coming out of the housing. The pins are not driven into the hole in the ball, but just far enough to enter the grooves.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS";color:#002060'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS";color:#002060'>The roll pin I just removed from my BJ7 gearbox measures 0.218" diameter and 1 inch long. For BJ8 gearboxes, serial numbers 1442 and up, two threaded "Locating pins", P/N 2A3602 are shown instead of rollpins. The original gearbox for your BJ8 was 12706, so it should have the two threaded locating pins (and a spring washer under each) if it is still the original.
