So it is intended to be plugged?  Or does it need to be drilled and tapped and a proper plug put into it?

Jonas, the BMC Mechanical Service Parts List for BJ7/BJ8 shows a threaded plug for the early gearboxes, S/N 29K/H101 to 29K/H5793, and a plain plug for all gearboxes after that.  The threaded plugs have a square head for wrenching.   The gearbox in my BJ8 (S/N 11271 M) has a plug that has no wrenching head on it, so I would guess it is a plain plug that is hammered or pressed in.  It may be brazed to ensure that it doesn't come out, but I can't tell with it in the car and with paint on it.

 

I would be interested in the serial number of the gearbox in your shop.  It's on the passenger's side of the gearbox casing, on a raised "boss" in the middle of the center "waffle".

I have a ’67 healey transmission in the shop.  The hole for the detent ball plug (Ref. Moss catalog page 54 part 22) has been filled with what appears to be some sort of brazing.  

 

It is my understanding that there was a late change on these gearboxes, but I have no idea whether or not this is correct or not.

 

Any ideas?
