[Healeys] Engine Block Casting Number

Scott, the engine casting and stampings is chart is interesting and useful; but I believe the BJ8 Phase 1 and BJ8 Phase 2 entries can be a bit misleading.

It's true that the lowest 29K engine number was 101. But that engine did not go into the lowest BJ8 Phase 1 chassis number (25315). The actual engine that was installed in chassis 25315 at the factory was 29K/RU/H571. Engine /H101 was originally installed in chassis 25331.

At the other end of the Phase 1 scale, the highest chassis number was 26704 (which had engine /H1174). There were cars between the lowest and highest Phase 1 chassis numbers that received engine numbers as high as /H2123 (so far recorded). The highest engine number for Phase 1 cars can only be determined when all the engine numbers for those cars are known (i.e., by more people than the BMIHT staff).

The lowest Phase 2 chassis number (26705) received engine /H1713. The highest chassis number (43026) got engine /H17504; but the car that was actually completed on the assembly line last (43000) got the highest engine number (/H17631).

I realize the chart wasn't constructed with all that in mind, but I believe most people would associate the lowest chassis number with the lowest engine number, etc., and it wasn't done that way at the factory.

Good Day to all. Do enjoy the Festive Season.

Attached is my file of engine castings and stampings. It is not complete and has periodic updates.

Hi Bob; If you put ' "Austin Healey" 12B766 ' into goggle search, you will find that the block casting number 12B766 corresponds to a BJ7 - BJ8 block.
