[Healeys] Clutch-related noise

You know, by now you should have figured out you have to take it apart in any case.  There is nothing you can do while it is assembled in the car.  99% of the time you never know what is really wrong until you disassemble and inspect.  Best case you will end up with a new clutch and throw out bearing.  Hopefully nothing wrong with the transmission, but it would not hurt to do a cursory internal inspection while it is out.  Better to head off trouble before it becomes a real and expensive problem.  Or, you can just drive it until it breaks. Just my 2 cents.Mike MacLean

It seems unrelated to engine speed and sounds the same with the car stationary in neutral and clutch out as it does at speed in any gear.

Michael,
Can you determine if the noise is related to engine speed?

While driving today I noticed a new noise: A faint but constant whining/purring sound that is present when the clutch pedal is NOT depressed, whether in neutral or in gear and whether in motion or sitting still.
When I depress the clutch pedal the sound goes away. Clutch and transmission operation seem normal. BTW I have a Toyota five-speed with a BJ8 diaphragm clutch.

Thoughts please?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
