[Healeys] Rear axle gasket question

A little clarification...

What some are calling an "O-Ring" is not an O-ring at all (even though Moss calls it one) It's a squarish profiled seal between the bearing and the axle area toward the Diff. The paper gasket keeps the bearing grease from oozing out into the brake area. Don't ask me why I know this is important.

The so-called o-ring seals the inboard side, the paper gasket seals the outboard side.

There is then .010" between the carrier and axle flange. The gasket takes up the slack - is the compressed gasket strong enough to in effect be a shim between these two parts?
