[Healeys] Removing the anodizing

The cockpit trim on a Healey I am working on is pretty ugly.  I need to sand it out first so I can polish it. I've found a number of suggestions on the web, most of which require heat.  Has anyone found an effective way to strip the anodizing without using exotic chemicals and heat.  I have seen some posts that recommend oven cleaner.  Has anyone used oven cleaner effectively?
