You're absolutely correct, Ira. We should all just assume whatever story the prospective buyer is giving is a flat-out lie. However, for some strange reason I insist on retaining just a little faith in the human species which, of course, means I will be disappointed occasionally. OTOH, as my follow-up to my own post noted, sometimes you make new friends and your faith is restored just a little. 

I have mixed feelings about the whole business; obviously, if you sell something to somebody they are free to do with it as they wish. But, if they lie and say they're going to do--or not do--something and they don't then, well, I don't like being lied to (just a thing with me, I guess). If they negotiate the price down by promising they will do--or not do--something and they violate that agreement then technically that could be construed as breach of contract--esp.if it's in writing--and could be subject to legal recourse. 

I was really looking forward to meeting the seller of our 100M, and showing him the progress we'd made the car, and our adherence to the 'understanding' he and my father had but he died before I got the chance.

So as I read these,occurs to me that: If you sell your car because you have/want to and they pay what you feel is a fair price, what's your beef? If you sold it under market because of a good story, that's on you. Once you sell/give something away, you relinquish ownership. 
So be sure you get the price you want. I am lucky that my wife and kids want the car after I pass on. 
Reminds me of when I was a kid. My dad sold his 51 Ford to our gardener for his son to drive. A year or so later the kid drove by to show my dad the hot rod he had built. My dad spoke of it often and felt it was so cool the kid got new life out of the old car. 
Not much we can do after we pass out cars on accept enjoy the memories of ownership.
