Gotta ask, why not put the cap on the backside of the gauge? If you have gas fumes under the dash you have LOTS of problems.

I totally agree with Michael. The adding of capacitance ( and the possibility of a discharge) to a mixture of gasoline vapors could
be a bad situation. I am involved in getting our company’s instruments rated to operate in a hazardous environment ( gas mixtures
in air) and it does not take much of a spark to ignite a mixture of gas and air.
