Although the drift method is effective it can damage and even stretch the housing if you aren't very careful. There is another method which is great, particularly if you are doing this job regularly.

You need to come up with a disc of 1/8b thick steel that is just a little larger than the ID of the outer bearing race.

Remove sufficient metal from opposite sides of the disc to allow it to pass through the race on edge. Pass it through the race, turn it to lay flat inboard of the race then use a press to remove the bearing race by pressing on the disc from the other side of the hub.

It takes a bit of bfettlingb to get the disc to the correct dimensions to slip into place but once you have got it right you will never resort to the bash bash method again.

Fellow Listers,
I'm replacing my front hubs on my BJ7. The old bearings look good.
However I can't figure out how to remove the outer race of the inner
bearing. There is insufficient lip of the outer race to drift it out to
the back of the hub. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Elton
