Hi Patrick
I believe that would be to provide tension to the small ball in the outer
end of the nipple to make it act like a one-way valve to keep the grease
inside.
Cheers

Subject: [Healeys] Grease Nipple Coil Springs
G'day
Perhaps someone out there will tell me the purpose of this?
This afternoon I have been cleaning the steering tie-rods and ball-joint
ends of the new Healey. When I unscrewed the grease nipples I noticed that
each has a small coil spring inside the part of the nipple that screws into
the back of the ball-joints.
Has anyone seen this before and tell the purpose of them? Now before you go
rushing out to examine yours, this is for a real Healey and not an
Austin-Healey.
