Brian,

My BJ8 dipstick is 17" total length.
The MAX notch is 11" from the stop collar.
That's the important measurement.
Engine presently apart so I cannot check the oil level.

Did you screw the sump plug back in after draining? ;-)

Subject: [Healeys] Full line on dipstick

I have just changed the oil and filter in my late BJ8. The filter has
been
changed to a spin on Napa filter. Both the shop manual and drivers
manual
say that after draining the oil and changing the filter it will take
7.5
litres to fill the crankcase.

After putting 7.25 litres of oil in, I checked the dipstick but there
was
nothing showing. I started the car, ran it for a few minutes, got 60
lbs oil
pressure then shut it off. After about 5 minutes I again checked the
oil.
There was a trace of oil on the bottom of the dipstick, well below the
minimum line. Now I am wondering if I have an incorrect dipstick. By
my
calculations it will take about 9 litres of oil to fill this thing to
the
full line which I don't think is anywhere near correct.

My question for the list is, Do I have the wrong dipstick and what is
the
correct length from the bottom of the dipstick to stop collar at the
top.
Mine measures 17".

I recall reading of someone else having the same query several years
back
but as the search element of the archives is currently unavailable
I'll have
to depend on the collective memories of the list.
