I think 3 in 1 is just a "light engineering" oil.

My sender unit seizes up every three years or so. I have to remove it from
the tank and work the pivot with some WD40.  I then oil it with 3 in 1 (not
sure if this make of light oil is available outside the UK but I guess you
will have something similar.
