[Healeys] Install BJ8 center console

Hi,

I removed the center console from my BJ8.   I had to remove the shifter
knob to get it out, but I didn't take the shifter out.   Now I'm trying to
put the center console back in, and I can't quite get it swung into place.
It looks like I need to remove the shifter lever to do this.

Is it possible to install the center console with the shift lever in place?

If not, how do I remove the shift lever?
