Thanks Kees,

                  I talked to a couple folks who knew what works allowing
the natural rust color to come thru and the formula is:

pint boiled linseed oil
3oz beeswax
cup turpentine
drop of Japan drier

Problem with linseed by itself is it takes forever to dry.  This works
better.

You can use raw linseed oil. Penetrates like no other stuff and stops
the rot. leaves the rust a shade darker but it does not turn black as
most rust converters do. Cheap and effective. It will cure because of
the iron oxide. If wanted you can paint over it afterwards.
