Hi John,
I haven't found that necessary on most of the ones I've done and I am
inclined to use a hammer only as a last resort. Amazingly the thread
section on the shaft of these boxes and idlers is fairly soft and pretty
easy to bend or distort.Once bent the shaft is almost impossible to repair.
This however is not the situation with the TR6 rear hubs that Dave
mentions. Although I have great tool for removing those the process still
requires significant percussive encouragement!!
