[Healeys] steering wheel

G'day Jim

I have recently been through this exercise.

There is no clip with the non-adjustable steering wheel. With mine I found
that wear in the splines caused it to not want to come off. It was freely
moving on the splines by about a cm, but then it felt as if it was hitting
something solid, not unlike a circlip.

I removed mine by using a three arm puller. Use a small piece of wood at the
facing side of the wheel and for the side facing the dash I removed the
aluminium retaining clamp from its position behind the dash. Then loosely
clamped it to just behind the wheel and placed the puller arms on that.
(Thanks to Mike Salter for that tip)

It was then a simple matter of pulling it off by turning the puller.

Have photos if you wish.

Subject: [Healeys] steering wheel

I received this email today about removing a steering wheel. I have not done
this in many years but I do remember there was a clip somewhere in there. Is
non-adjustable different?

Any suggestions I will pass along to the owner.

TIA

I have a 1960 A-H 3000 BT7 with a non-adjustable steering wheel. I
purchased
a replacement non-adjustable steering wheel from Moss, but am having
difficulty removing the old steering wheel. After the nut and washer are
removed from the steering column, the old wheel moves freely back and forth
on
the column splines - but only to a certain point. The wheel clanks abruptly
when pushing it towards the dash and when I pull it towards the drivers seat
as if it is hitting solid steel. Pushing the steering wheel as far as it
will
go towards the dash, it will go to about B< inch from the end of the
steering
wheel splines before the wheel hits something solid and stops. Looking in
between the column splines and wheel splines, I can see that there is an
obstruction around the shaft that is causing the wheel to move no further.

Some A-H club members advise me that the old steering wheel should move
towards the dash far enough to reveal a clip on the steering column shaft
and
that it can be easily pried out with a screw driver or other tool. But this
is not the case with my particular set up.

Any experience with removing this type of steer wheel?
