Hooking it up to the old solenoid gives you the option to push button crank it which is a nice option to keep.

That is an interesting point about the starter having its own solenoid, I'm
pretty sure you are right. I don't know exactly which make of starter I
have but it looks exactly like all the others I have seen and it has that
wire on the outside of it. I'll have to read up on it but presumably then
you can just bypass the old starter solenoid as it is redundant. Does that
make sense?
