[Healeys] Decline of the British Car Industry

Here is my favorite book: Whisler, *The End of the Road: The Rise and Fall
of Austin-Healey, MG, and Triumph*. Strangely enough, this was one of a
series of Sociological Studies published by the University of Illinois
Press. Whister was a well know writer on the British Car industry before he
wrote the book.

Whisler's theory is that everything was all right while the shop stewards
ran the floor, but when the desk jockeys who knew nothing about running the
shop took over, everything went down hill. Self made men like Austin and
Morris had the arrogance, prevalent even today by some self made men, that
if I made it there is something wrong with you if you didn't. In other
words arrogance brought down the industry.

If you can find a copy of *Earning the American Dream*, it illustrates how
arrogance brought them down.

That book has already been written-
it's WHEELS OF MISFORTUNE,
The Rise and Fall of the British Motor Industry by
Jonathan Wood.
