[Healeys] Turning Engine Over

Is there any problem with trying to turn an engine over with the starter,
 with out the carbs on.
This car has sat for ten years and I have been soaking the pistons for a few
days while I'm working on the carbs.  No fuel, yes coolant, distributor
disconnected, plugs out.
Basically it would be just the starter , and coolant system that are attached.
 
I  just want to see if the rings are loosened up
and the engine isn't looked up,  and maybe do a compression check while I am
at it.  
I can't get to the crank nut to turn it by hand. 
 
Any suggestions appreciated
