I believe a Pertronix is more than electronic points; they maintain a time constant regardless of RPM, unlike points which open and close faster at higher RPM and may not allow primary winding saturation (resulting in lower secondary voltage). The newer ones supposedly have even more capability.

If the electronic ignition is a Pertronix (or a similar design) that is 
actually only an electronic set of "points" then the voltage is a function of 
the coil which may or may not be higher voltage than the original.
