[Healeys] BJ8 starter

I think I killed the starter om my BJ8 today. The car has sat idle for a while and it ususally takes a fair amount of cranking before it comes back to life. Today I heard this unusual noise from the firewall area and then it would not crank. I can hear the fuel pump clicking away but no cranking.
What is the common wisdom on the list when it comes to starters? 
DIY rebuild?
Buy a rebuilt unit and from whom?
Have it rebuilt and by whom?
Moss or VB?
