As Alan has stated " You can try activating the lever manually as you
drive down the road (beware of your pant leg and the prop shaft!)and see
if it kicks in."  Note that the hole alignment as described in the
manual is a starting point for adjustment, after 40 years mine had to be
adjusted past that hole and the only way I knew for sure that the
overdrive did work was by doing what Alan suggests.
