To appease your wife, consider what I did, build it with a reverse 
dormer and the shop can become more attractive than an average 
garage/shop.  I have an 11 foot door with my 2 post lift on the left 
side (open to the roof) and on the right side, a standard door for one 
story usage with a second floor wood shop above it. It is pole barn 
construction.   (Photo Attached)

Jason is correct with the concrete for the lift. They recommend at least 
6" in the area of the 2 post lift.
