I do similar as Glen notes below, but I have also used non hardening blue Hylomar on the gasket surface that sits against the head.  I think that  I have had the same gasket on the valve cover for over 20 years.  The oil keeps the cork gasket in good shape just like wine keeps the cork in good shape in a wine bottle.JoeB

I use stock cork gaskets.Glue it to the rocker cover, glue, not RTV.Give it a nice even coat of Permatex Right Stuff, work it into the gasket surface a little, smooth it out & leave a light coating.Let it sit for around 15 minutes & starts to 'skin", put a thin wipe of oil on the head so the gasket doesn't adhere to the head surface, fit cover, done. The gasket is now part of the cover, it won't squish out, nor will it leak because it has a perfect seal against the head, & can be R&Rd many times w/o additional sealer.FWIW YMMV etc etc...Glen Efinger
