For 30 years I thought that the weight of 2,000 pounds listed on the SCCA
PCS sheet for my TR4, was the legal racing weight for my car under the 1972
rules our club chose, and 2,020 under 1967 rules. I have been scaled many
times and they always referred to the PCS weight.
This years my club sent me an official weight of 1,900 (plus a 10 lb
penalty so the total is actually 1,910). I asked and was informed that
there is a 5% allowance, on the PCS weight; without fuel and driver.
On page 1967 GCR - 188A of APPENDIX A AUTOMOBILES 1. Production
Category 1.1 Definition 1.e:
The SCCA shall publish the specifications for each recognized Production
Category model. This specification shall state the weight for each model,
which weight shall normally correspond to the official weight listed on the
model’s recognition form, or else shall be obtained by taking the weights
of a number of examples of the same model, selected at random, and weighed
under the following conditions: With the spare wheel and tire for the size
normally provided by the manufacturer, with full oil sump (or tank), and
with full water tank if one is used but without fuel, tools, luggage or
anyone aboard. *Weight tolerance of minus 5% as compared with the official
weight will be granted Production Category automobiles, provided the
reduced weight results from modifications permitted in these rules.*
It is the same in the 1972 GCR. Is this the way other clubs are doing it
and we just figured it out?
I have no idea how I could get my TR4 down to 1,900 lbs, but the heavy
1980's roll structure would be a start.
