AFFF is very caustic and is used on navy ships to smother fires in engineering spaces.  Not really suitable for cars if you want to reuse the car.  It’s a mess to clean up.

Some of the two-pull systems use AFFF.  This is a good fire fighting agent, but by no means the only one.  AFFF contains PFAS, which is a man-made family of chemicals coming under increasing scrutiny for causing health issues.  If you use this and dispose of it improperly it could come back to bite you.  Fighting a fire with AFFF is costing our Town hundreds of thousands of dollars in tracking contamination plumes and treating the wells in affected homes.

Dropping this mandatory rule on us at the last minute does not sit well.  No one wants to be unsafe, I don’t think the rule is that unreasonable, but the timing to get this done is unreasonable.

Advanced warning:

The SVRA rules on fire systems are much more strict than SCCA and some of the other sanctioning bodies such as VRG.  Notably, plumbed in systems are required, and they must have two activation points, one accessible to the driver and the other accessible to a course worker without having to lean into the car.  Furthermore, they must be re-certified every two years.  Note that these are requirements, not recommendations, and new this year (2024)
