i have many decades of race experience and specifically with the Toyota T50
and W57-58 gearboxes since the late 80's
Both gearboxes were fragile from new, and the syncros were barely large
enough to handle the gear mass . Lots of wear on operating forks and syncro
outer hubs. The W series was absurdly heavy for anything buy a large car
when the T50 was built with great care and attention to detail, they would
handle up to about 200hp engines, provided full power rpm was under about
9000. above that, the bearing sizes etc all showed the weaknesses. above
about 175 HP, the bolt-together cases, started to deflect and we had to
introduce reinforcing straps
thru all this we experimented with various oils, and did not find a
'standout", BUT, in all cases , the various synthetic oils all handled the
temperatures best with the least degradation of the oil
more broadly, we have learned that selecting an oil requires FACTS about
operating temperatures. The T50 in race applications can easily get to
130-150C and in nearly all cases, conventional 80 or 90 weight gear oils
are starting to fall apart (lab testing needed to prove this). The more
modern synthetic oils can generally handle the higher temps better. Once
you have FACTS about temperatures, then start looking at the kinematic
viscosity of the oils at the temps you are finding.
in some cases, its a compromise between high temperature stability and cold
temperature shifting. it may not be sold in USA, but ELF supply a race
specific gear oil that is well and truly proven to solve this.
in some race categories we were permitted to use a transmission oil pump
and cooler, and this expanded the choice of oils and grades, albeit at the
expense of extra weight and complications. in a few cases we deliberately
built cars below homologated race weight so we could add diff and trans oil
coolers and bring the weight back up to minimum. perhaps an overkill for
race TR's??
in contrast, i have nothing good to say at all about the various Redline
"shockproof" oils and intending users should research them carefully
