When I raced at a long track with some tight turns, like Road Atlanta or Road America, I used a 4.3 rear end gear with the Dolomite close ratio gears and an A-Type overdrive. This combination gave me a good second gear for the tight turns (e.g. turn 7 at Road Atlanta), and the overdrive gave me a good top end for the long straights at both tracks.
Turns 5 and 6 at Road America is a good example of where you might use 2nd gear direct for turn 5, an upshift into 2nd overdrive on the hill up to turn 6, then back down to 2nd direct for turn 6.
I hope this is useful.
Regards,
Jack

The set that JK used was the late layshaft cluster and then the dolomite sprint 3rd / 4th set. When mixed with the overdrive, you get the most useful gear combos.
O/D 3rd is more for not doing a 3rd to 4th shift on both A and J-types, as is 2nd O/D for the A type. In both cases, while you get the extra gears, you don't really get any advantage rowing through them as opposed to grabbing a gear in a quick burst.
FWIW, 2nd o/d is awesome for an autocrosser. ;-)

JK also had a set that he used for O/D gearboxes to make the splits more even.
I am not sure what they were, but they worked well.

JK Jackson had that all figured out for a non overdrive box with the goal to get a better 2-3 spread.

I have a ton of gearboxes laying around, so if there is a combination I should try I’d love to give it a shot.
