Welcome Rod, looks like you got baptized into the cult of racing TRs...!That engine probably has more wrong with it than the obvious hole in the piston and 0-ring seal damage between #1 & 2.The 1st thing that you might do is to read all of the late, great Kas Ks books, all you could ever want to know about Spitfires.
Re spare engine, just a few points-I would go with a conservative mild-spec engine to start with so you can get some seat time; doing a full-race spec will guarantee that you spend more time in the pits than on track. The rear gear ratio will determine RPM range, so if it has a 4.10 it'll be pretty "buzzy", = shorter service life.
As mentioned, use good parts, rods, pistons, bearings, etc.Pay very close attention to clearances during assembly.Balance all recip & rotating.
Crank thrust is weak area, several mods can be done.I advise accusump & oberg be fitted.Crack-check the crank on a regular basis, TBD by RPM range you run.Driveline-The gearbox is a POS.Use GT-6 gears for good ratio but it's still a POS.Driveshafts are VERY sensitive to imbalance, make sure it's done right.
NOTE-Rear axles are more important than ANYTHING else on a racing Spitfire, when one breaks you're likely going over, and we have numerous members of that club right here.
I wouldn't consider putting a Spit on track for serious competition w/stock axles, and the availability of replacements is limited.
Also once all is done get the car on a good maintenance & inspection program.
Just a few points to consider that may help maximize track time, hope it helps, others will jump in with more.

ps- attaching a copy of my checklist, don't know if it will work, if not email me if you want a copy

Subject: [Fot] Rebuild

Hello Everyone,
I am a new member and new to racing Spitfires.  In fact, my first experience with racing, competition school in Waterford MI, didn't  end well for my engine (see attachment).
I am planning to rebuild an extra small journal 1300 and I am requesting advise from the very knowledgeable people on this site.  I have all the spare engine parts I could ever need and a great machine shop near by so mainly I am interested on advice on where to buy parts( pistons, rods ,rings etc..).
There are many sources on the internet but since I have never built one of these before I am interested in your input.
Also, while I'm at it, I would like to improve my transmission and rearend.  I am open to anything from minor improvement to a complete swap of my transmission or rearend.
Thanks for you help.
