[Fot] [TR] would any of you re-use head studs?

That's a good point and quite true, especially w/the new replacement gaskets, the holes are all big and the gasket can shuffle around, and as you also mentioned, the inlet valve relief area is especially critical.Glen

Now matter how the head gasket is oriented on the block, I also orient the head gasket on the head to make sure the gasket does not intrude into the combustion chamber, especially where the intake valve pocket is relieved.  Sometimes it doesn't exactly match the arc on the cylinder liner.John Styduhar

The original steel shim gaskets had 1 front & 1 rear diagonal holes just slightly smaller so that the gasket would locate on those 2 studs; you lay the gasket on & screw in those 2 studs, and fit the head and the rest screw in easily. The current replacements have all of the holes same size.

Hi Phil.  I used the same exact process when installing the steel shim head gaskets on my TR-4 race car all those years ago.  2 studs, head gasket, rest of studs (all gasket surfaces and the block liberally smeared with Gaskacinch gasket sealer), then the cylinder head (also smeared with Gaskacinch)..  Worked then, sounds like it still works now.  Some things never change.

I had been re-using stock head studs with no problems. But I found that the ability to install the ARP head studs with an Allen hex wench made it far easier to install the studs. I only put in two studs, then the pre treated head gasket, then the other head studs and finally, the head itself. Because the steel shim gaskets that I use are such a precision fit on the studs, it is easier to install the gasket if there are only two studs in place.  And yes, I re use the ARP studs. Phil Gott‘65 TR4A HRG Group 3.

I re-use the ARP head studs.  Don’t have any stock “critical" bolts/studs in my race engine.

Somebody, maybe Randall, said run a good nut up and down the thread, if stretched it will bind.

I respect your collective advice and experience. The 4A’s head is at the machinist for a cleanup (head gasket failure). Would any of you re-use the head studs, or would you replace them? They are likely original, and even if not, have been in place for at least 25 years. I have my thoughts on this, but am interested in yours. Thanks, Cliff  Sent from Mail for Windows 10 ** triumphs at autox.team.net **
