I’d add that when he roughed it up for paint, he could have given it a second round of JB Weld without the fibers.  A thin coat, as if applying Bondo, filling in divots, etc.  When that dries, then he could sand it without damaging fibers, and the result would be a sexier finish that would be easier to keep clean.
