 Yeah it's to keep the key from going in too far and wedging up the ramp in the end of the keyway, and I 2nd crack-checking that thing once it's apart.

 The factory did that to "stake" the woodruff key.
It's normal and it's also where cracks start when you beat on the axles.
It should be okay for a street car, but you should crack test while its apart.

 Rebuilding Will’s TR3 rear axle this weekend and found little notches at the end of the shear key on both axles. The picture is if the passenger side which is the worst. 

1). How does this happen?  It doesn’t look like a crack more like punch or chisel marks at the end of the key. 

2). Is this problematic as a stress riser for a street car?  If so, can I just grind and smooth these marks out and be good?
