The TR4, 4A and maybe the 250 had the Surrey Top option. I have an original one on my TR4A but not the hard center section. I don't know how many they ultimately made but you better be able to anticipate rain by about a half hour to erect the soft center piece with its "erector set" framework, thumb screws that you have to be a contortionist to screw up into the rear section from inside and then the little hooks and snaps that keep it from flying off!!! The hooks on the windshield post and rear post were really good at gouging you when you were in a hurry. It was good in theory and looked good but very crazy in execution!!! Not much structural integrity either as it was a giant cast piece of aluminum or pot metal. It just bolted on in place of the convertible frame. Triumph got it wrong in name and execution but Porsche refined it and called it a Targa.!!!
hought the TR4A too. It cost an extra $100 over the convertible version. I never saw one back in the day. An accessory soft "surrey" top could .be used when the hardtop panel was removed. - Larry

This car appears to be a Targa Top car. I had never noticed it before, but this makes sense for racing. I don't know if they ever made a true "hardtop" for the TR-4, like the Steel TR-3 hardtop. I've never seen one. If not, then the Targa Top would be a good alternative to improve aerodynamics (Verses the open car), assuming you kept the solid roof panel in place. I have seen a few aftermarket plastic hardtops, in fact my race car came with one, but never a true hardtop from the factory. Just an observation. Any comments?

I saw these for sale on craigslist just now and I thought to share them with the FOT. It is my understanding the grills used on the 60’s Triumph Works TR4s’ engine bay vents were repurposed grills from the Triumph Herald.
Here’s a pair for sale. (Old TR4 pics from the web just for reference)
I have no connection with the seller.
