Exactly what I had in mind!!  The last enduro I ran at Road America was at the SCCA Divisional there a month or so ago and I used up most of my 7.2 gallons in 60 minutes.  The ambient temperature was maybe 75 degrees F (so, fuel in jugs likely the same), so I wondered if I cooled it down to, say, 35 degrees F how much extra fuel (density) I could get into the cell.

Based on the formulas sent to me by several helpful FOT’rs, the math says I could get a little extra fuel density, but not enough to make a difference.  I’ll just have to soft-pedal it and hope I can do that and go faster than the other guys or that they don’t and have to make an extra stop.

Also, I remember Kas’ story about putting plastic water bottles into a fuel tank in the TR4s to meet the volume limit and later discovering that the plastic had failed and they actually had more volume during the race than anticipated.  Good story.

Actually what Smokey did was Drilled holes in the frame rails so tech knew he wasn't putting fuel there but they didn't look at what was inside the frame rail.  He put 2 inch radiator hose in there for a fuel line.  The rule was for fuel cell capacity but no rule for the fuel line size.

When I ran SCCA nationals at Road America in the 70's I had a 6 gallon cell, the races were 15 laps plus parade lap and cool off lap (68 total miles).  I was getting 10 miles/gallon and never ran out of fuel.  How you ask...  Saturday night we drained the cell, drank all the beer and put the gas cans in the cooler.  Fueled the car and pushed it to grid Sunday morning.  Before we would get to the grid the fuel cell was pissing out the overflow from the fuel expanding in less than 5 minutes.

So, how cold does the fuel have to be in order to have any significant affect on volume?  I need to make 7.2 gallons of fuel go 75 minutes at Road America this weekend, where I typically burn a bit more than 1 gallon every 10 minutes.  I could soft-pedal it to save some fuel, but there is some quick competition out there.
