[Fot] Too much clearance on distributor drive gear

Yes it has to be pressed/driven out from the bottom, they're a pretty tight fit. Also over the years I've run into several replacement bushes with the ID & OD bore axis slightly off, enough to cause misalignment on the oil pump drive end with the pump fitted up, so that's another point to pay close attention to when replacing them...Glen

I'm pretty sure you have to remove the bushing from the bottom, but there may be a chance to remove from the topside with an inside bearing puller/slide hammer.  Do not drop the little woodruff key into the engine.

Hi - if the bushing is worn, it needs to be replaced. I would not run the gear with a thin shim under it, the shim will not last. I just looked at Moss and they have that distributor bushing listed for $75 plus or minus.
If you have slop with that distributor drive, you will never get the ignition timing to be rock solid.

On page 1.130 and 1.131 of the Workshop Manual it describes the procedure for obtaining the correct clearance or float for the distributor gear driven by the camshaft.  It gives two scenarios: one where there is interference of the gear and the bushing; and a second where there is not enough clearance or float.  What it doesn’t consider is if there is too much clearance between the gear and the bushing.  That is the case on my TR4 engine.  I had 0.016 clearance and added a 0.010 shim under the gear to get the desired 0.006 clearance.  Has anybody else had this experience?  And what did you do about it.  Tim Murphy_______________________________________________
