Scott,
I don’t think Halon cakes up, that is the old style white powder stuff. Most garage extinguishers are like that and are probably not operable after a few years.
Here in Nashville we have a place that can refill Halon, it a place you go to get any and all types of fire extinguishers refilled. The other option that I have done id the ESS water based unit that are SCCA legal and if you have an accidental discharge you can refill them at the track with plain water and their chemical mix. Only down side is the water can freeze if you leave the car in the cold and it can crack the aluminum tank….don’t ask LOL!! Easy removal though if you do need to be in a cold climate. Same stuff they use at the airports the foamy stuff. Washes off easy too and is not toxic within reason like Halon.

I’ve got a 5 lb Halon bottle with nozzles in my car that is at least 10 years old, probably more. I’ve heard the product cakes up and will no longer work after a while, so I’m interested in making sure the car is as safe as can be.
I’ve looked at replacement systems (this one is SPA, they no longer service Halon) and they will cost at least $700 if I want something that is legal for SCCA.
Anyone know if the Halon actually does become unserviceable, or have experience getting the Halon bottle tested/refilled?
Yes, Halon is ozone depleting and no longer sold. However, I’ve still got a tank full!
