When I think of Syd Silverman, I remember a quiet, Guardian Angel of early vintage racing (late 1970s/early 1980s).  I am personally aware of several times when an event or affair was experiencing a revenue shortfall, Syd would step forward with his pen and check book and pick up the pieces.  And he did so quietly.  He was one of the most unpretentious people I ever met.  The other things I remember were the incredible cars he brought to events to race.  Stuff you normally only saw in pictures or behind velvet ropes in a museum.  He raced them.  Mike Silverman told me that when his Dad finally sold his collection, every penny went to charity.

I'll miss my twice yearly conversations with Mike Silverman, Syd's son, who was the publisher until this deal.

Word on the street says that publication was just sold to a conglomerate, marking the end of an era. Syd Silverman started it many, many years ago. Randy Riggs is supposed to stay involved (at least for a while).Bill Dentinger
