I think overfilling and running could result in leakage past seals and make 
a mess. Like Scott says disconnect the driveshaft.

It's just so easy to remove those four bolts that connect the drive shaft 
flange to the diff flange.  Why not do it?  It'll take 10 minutes.

If that’s the case he could just overfill the gearbox before towing and then 
lower the level when done.  That way the main shaft would still run in oil.
