Couple points:

GT-6 trans case and all internals will fit Spitfire. HOWEVER,the GT6 bellhousing will NOT,must use Spitfire bellhousing, preferably the aluminum one....Also,the GT6 input shaft must be machined down to fit the Spit ,in length and nose step lengths and ODs...there are probably a number of FOT people that have the drawing for machine work ( lathe)...The GT6 input splines are 1" x 10   (ten being the number of splines),larger than the spit ones...So you would also need to use matching 1" x 10 clutch centers.and the seal in the bellhousing must be larger to fit the 1" input shaft...One more thing, you may need to change the main shaft rear flange that mates to driveshaft...some hole patterns are different....and the mainshaft splines may differ from models and driveshaft combos..... Other than that,...drops right in !

All of that certainly could have been done in this car, that was very competitive in its time.
I keep finding GT6 stuff in various places throughout the car.

I have to keep both cars parts catalogs handy...

Brad,     Externally, the GT6 and Spitfire boxes will look the same.  I believe the case is interchangeable, it's just that you have to use ALL GT6 gears, or ALL Spitfire gears, no mix and match.  GT6 has the close ratios.
The GT6 input shaft has to be shortened to be used in a Spitfire, and the spline count is different.

Interesting...I received three gearboxes with my Spitfire.
In the car is an overdrive box. The other two are standard 4 speed Spitfire boxes; one labeled ‘wide’, the other ‘close’.
Now you have me wondering what’s inside??
How did they build different ratio boxes back in the day?

No you can't just change a couple gears, the GT-6 uses completely different bits, and there are 2 different GT-6 boxes, most parts not interchangeable.

Subject: [Fot] Spitfire Gearbox

Triumph Friends,Now that we've all worked out the oil cooler/filter issue, who wants to take a crack at Spitfire gearbox ideas?? I currently have a 1296 engine bolted up to a 1500 single rail gearbox. This year after the Kastner Cup, Marty Sukey suggested finding at GT6 gearbox as they have a closer ratio gear set - I think I even remember reading that some of the LeMans Spitfires had GT6 gearboxes. I'm having a difficult time finding one so I was going to ask the folks that have been this a lot longer than me, is it possible to just put GT6 gears (specifically 2nd and 3rd) into a 1500 Spit gearbox? Has anyone tried? Are there better options? I have two extra 1500 single rail boxes to mess with. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!M. Huovinen
