Sorry, but I disagree. I'm fairly intimate with that area, as I've had
trouble with it and I have several of those starters. The Denso design,
lightweight gear drive starters commonly sold as aftermarket replacements
for TR2-8 and Stag all have a rod on the base of the solenoid plunger, which
reaches through the housing and pushes the drive gear out before the
contacts make contact.

I couldn't find a good diagram just now, but you can see the pin here

There is a bearing ball down there, because the gear turns but the solenoid
plunger does not. I discovered the hard way that if you leave out the ball
(must've fallen out at some point and got overlooked), the gear doesn't
extend far enough and may or may not engage with the ring gear. Started out
working about 99% of the time, but as the rod wore (from riding against the
gear), it got more and more unreliable until I had to investigate.

The Lucas starters don't work as Bill described either. The earlier ones
with the inertia (aka Bendix) drive don't have integral solenoids at all.
The later ones with the integral solenoid use the solenoid to engage the
gears. Here's a diagram from the TR6 workshop manual. That offset pin on
the left is actually used to adjust how far the gear extends (although later
starters dropped the adjustment feature). The round housing behind the
pinion is just a roller clutch (so the starter motor cannot be overdriven
when the engine starts), it doesn't move the gear.

That integral solenoid draws a healthy wallop of current at first, which was
my main reason for keeping a secondary solenoid (or relay if you prefer).
It's much better able to handle the 20 or 30 amps than the puny contacts in
the starter switch. Plus, I like having the original starter button under
the hood, so I can crank the motor from there. For many pre-computer Mopar
products, it also allows the use of a safety interlock switch that returns
to ground.
