[Fot] Sealing Block Wedges

The new Payen gasket sets appear to come with neoprene pieces in place of the conventional wood wedges for use on the front sealing blocks, Spitfire and TR6 related.  These neoprene pieces suck for lack of a better term.  Years ago a local British shop commented that he didn't use the wood wedges, he used RTV in place of them.  Has anybody here used RTV or "The Right Stuff" to fill in the voids in place of the wood wedges with success, or failure for that matter?
