[Fot] Diff case spreader

Maybe not for the big TRs, but the Spitfire does -- the Stanpart Spit diff (I
don' got no Ford pieces on my car!). The sum of the shim packs on both sides
is supposed to be a couple thousandths more than the free space without shims
(measured with a dial gauge before final assembly).

And, yeah, the Spit pinion gear has shims too -- an even bigger PITA since
it's a press fit when you have to put it together, figure out how far you're
off, then take it apart again to put in the right ones.

Wait a minute Rocky. There are no shims sandwiched between the bearing cup
and the case on the TR 2-6 differential. The shims to set the backlash go
between the carrier and the cone bearing that is pressed on. You must be on
the friends of Ford website!

I've put the diff together more than once with a pack of shims varying
from fairly thick to paper thin (including some I cut myself from .007"
aluminum printing plate). Just made sure the thickest ones were on the outside
(sandwiching the thin ones between it and the bearing cup), then just tapped
in gently with a ball-peen hammer. The trick, of course, is not to bend the
outside shim.

      You really don't need one.
I have had them available to me but a little leverage with a pry bar
does just as well.
Installation requires tilting the cups and slight tapping with a dead
blow.
      Easy!!

Does anyone have a diff case spreader to loan or rent or is there
generic spreader that can be bought for reasonable?
