There's no wrong answer here, the big TR uses shims inside of the bearing,
Spit/GT-6 shims outside.

I agree with you Glenn, but factory Ford uses a single shim of the proper
thickness on each side of the carrier which is held in by the bearing cap.
I've seen thin shims walk out of the case because the bearing retainer cap
is not wide enough to secure them and the preload was not adequate.  The TR
caps are not made to retain shims between the cap and case.
