Duncan,
According to the Speed Channel's program covering the building of the
circuit, several tons of that soil were removed from the track area so that
it could be replaced by a more stable substance in order to keep the track
from sinking.  I can still remember walking through that stuff as a younger
version of myself.  The further you walk, the taller you become.

I gotta say this was done right with few exceptions.  Crowd control didn't
seem to be an issue very often (although you didn't want to get caught on
the
wrong side of the pedestrian bridge at lunchtime) and there were may places
to
get a good view.  We ended up watching from turn 19 where we could also see
turn 20, turn 1, and the Jumbotron directly across from us.  Turn 11 was
probably better even thought you can't see as much of the track.  There were
many passing attempts there and the Jumbotron screen is close and easy to
see.
The slope is steep there (for those with general admission tickets) so one's
view wasn't as likely to be blocked by somebody in a folding chair camping
out
in front of you as was the case at turn 19.  We had a grandstand seat at 6,
which I chose after studying the track map -- problem was, although we could
see a lot of the track from there, not much action occurred there.  I bought
the seat just in case the weather turned out to be rainy.  I'm very familiar
with the type of soil where the track is, having owned property with the
exact
same type -- it's called "black gumbo" for a reason.  It sticks to your
shoes
and before you know it you have six pounds of clay attached to each foot.
Many of the general admission observation points had little or no grass
growing yet and were covered with this soil.  Most attendees will never know
how nasty it would have been to have to walk through that soil, which would
have been tracked everywhere.

At any rate, it was great fun to be there.  Not sure I'll do it again since
I'm not that big a fan of F1 but it was nevertheless a good time.  I imagine
the other CVAR attendees would feel the same.
