[Fot] Stolen Race Car

Two words....'plausible deniability'.

N.Y. has the same 'Can't scrap a car without a title' law. In 35 years of
taking cars to junkyards and,or having them hauled away, I've been asked for a
title exactly once. It was the one time I a) had the title, and b) knew where
it was. In NY, there is an out for 'lost or misplaced' titles, in which the
seller simply signs a form stating they own the car or have the right to
dispose of it. That covered the scrap dealer nicely.

As to a scrapper giving $160 to the thief for it, many of these guys totally
operate on a $/lb basis and have breathed a few too many fumes along the way.
I had some oil tanks removed over the last few days and one of the scrappers
was thrilled to take a garbage can full of brake rotors, exhaust parts, and
the like. His comment "That's worth at least $5 at the recyclers!" Had he only
known that I would have paid him to haul it away...;) But he said the GT6 and
TR6 in the drive would fetch twenty to fifty each. And was disappointed when I
wouldn't give those to him as well.

The remaning question, is, of course, how much of a car do you need a title in
order to legally scrap it? I scraped out a Spit in 4 or 5 55gal drums at one
point.

I do have a handful of TR serial number plates and titles in my filing cabinet
however. Just In Case.

In any cage, I'm very glad you got it back. That's a great success story.
