Interesting, thats pretty much what I ended up doing since I already had 
the gasket and nothing to lose. I gently lifted up the fire ring up with 
a razer blade on my composite gasket and carefully removed some material 
beneath it with an exacto knife. Then I trimmed and rolled the copper 
fire ring in flattening it back in place so it followed the new contour 
of my head. It seemed to look ok so I decided to use it. We will see...
