Actually, the cooling rate is not that important because the tabs are made from very mild (low carbon) steel.? Heat them up until they glow orange a little and just let them air cool.? Should be OK if they aren't already cracked.

It will anneal them, which is not exactly the reknitting process you  
hope for, but it might relieve enough of the work hardening to keep  
them from breaking right away. You need to make sure to let the metal  
cool very slowly.
