I just played this game with my Spitfire last weekend.  We finally got the
bugs worked out of the new motor/gearbox/clutch combo and were able to run 6
consecutive sessions with no problems.  In addition to the IJ crank scraper,
I'm also running a 1 1/2 qt. Moroso accumulator, 13 row oil cooler and a
HP-1 filter.  I filled the cooler and filter with oil before attaching the
hoses, and then added oil to the normal fill line on the dip stick.  After
warming the engine, I opened the valve to the accumulator and let it fill.
Then, I added oil back to the normal line on the dipstick and went to the
track.

It's difficult to do (at least where my oil pressure gauge is mounted), but
you need to watch the oil pressure gauge in the turns.  Normal oil pressure
in my car is 70-80 psi.  I found it was dropping to 40 in the left hand
turns, which meant that the suction tube was sucking air and the accumulator
was providing the oil pressure.  I added a half quart and the problem went
away except for one turn.  Coming off the back straight at Portland, you
brake from top speed for a left-right sequence.  I noted that after hard
braking and sending the oil to the front of the pan, and then turning left,
the gauge was still dropping to 40 psi.  Added another 1/2 quart and the
pressure stays at 70-80 all the time.

Luckily, the field of cars was small, so I had plenty of safe time to look
at gauges where I normally never would.  In discussing this with the engine
builder, he told me not to worry if the dipstick shows overfull in the pits
since there is so much oil flying around in the engine at speed.  What you
need to do is to establish a new fill mark on the dipstick.  During all of
this, I had no oil coming out of the breathers, so I don't believe I
overfilled at all, even though I've now got 6+ quarts in the Spit.  Over the
winter, we'll look at some improved baffles for the oil pan.

The sandwich of material when adding a crank scraper and windage tray spacer
drops the oil pan (in my case) about 3/16 of an inch.  Should I be adjusting
the high  oil mark on the on the oil dip stick. Or is this move to small to
worry about ? Robert Bentley's book states 8 pints to fill an empty sump and
9 pints if the filter is changed out. I have an oil cooler etc. I have also
had to change the dip stick and its holder  tube in the block.  With the
cooler and filter I was in the range of 6 plus qts.
 Is it logical to take a new motor  with  out  the   filter on add the 8
pints
let the oil settle  this should give me the new bench mark needed on the dip
stick. Right ?? I believe most of  the additional oil for the cooler and
spin
on filter never settles back to the sump.                thanks for the help
