The United States was at the time of the Kyoto agreement in a position
to substantially input into the crafting of the agreement to produce terms
that were feasible. The reality of the situation was the US government was not
convinced that action was needed on global warming - now more widely referred
to as climate change. Consequently, the US policymakers allowed a document to
be drafted that contained provisions that would never be ratified in the
United States. Further, by not negotiating appropriate terms, it avoided a major
public/political confrontation with other governments who were then and
still are concerned about climate change.

As is obvious from the dialog here, there is still disagreement on
whether climate change is being accelerated by human activity. There is a well
funded group of lobbyists, public relations specialists, and scientists whose
job it is to critique findings on climate change - both for and against.
Critiquing the findings is relatively easy in the area of climate change because
the number of statistical variables are very large and measuring them with
accuracy & precision is a major challenge. I figure this group has the potential
to make a living on this issue for at least the next ten years or so.

The bottom line at the moment is that the earth is experiencing a period
of climate change. The consequences of these changes are evident across the
globe. The issue is whether we want to ignore it as a natural cycle or take
steps to reduce the consequences of our human activity. And if we decide it is
being accelerated as a consequence of human activity (as indicated by the UN
report); how does the burden gets fairly distributed get allocated and truly
implemented across the world.

Being people of action, I know that you will all want to do you fair
share. Does anyone know how many cows would be have to be purchased and butcher
to offset the emissions from our transporters and race cars this year?
