good advice, except for the marbles.  better to use steel nuts so you can use a magnet to get every one out

I cleaned out an old tank with a 1/4" thick layer of "varnish" at the bottom using a gallon of lacquer thinner. Let it sit in there and soak for a few days and it broke up most of the crud, I probably threw in some marbles to shake around and finish the job, but don't recall. I didn't want to use anything too abrasive since there was no visible rust yet. 

I cleaned out the clogged fuel exit tube with a piece of thick weed whacker line (the kind with ridges) - chucked it in my cordless drill and went down the tube with it until it was clear all the way to the tank.
